Rumpelstiltskin is an old fairy tale which is mainly about a beautiful girl called Kelly and a helpful goblin. One day, Kelly's show-off father boasts that Kelly can spin straw to gold. Therefore, the greedy king asks her to go to the palace because he wants her to spin straw to gold. But in fact, Kelly can not do that so she feels hopeless because she will die if she can't finish the task. Luckily, a goblin helps her but she needs to give something valuable to him. Kelly follows and she finishes the task to spin the bale of straw into gold. However, the king wants more gold and asks her to spin more. The goblin helps her again twice but she has nothing to give the goblin. So the goblin asks her to give him her first born child after she is married. The king is very glad after he sees the gold and he argees the prince to marry with Kelly. A year later, they have a baby. At this time, the goblin comes and asks for the baby. Kelly asks him to spare her son but the goblin says that he would not do so unless she guessed his name in three days. The next day, Kelly finds out all the boys' names and asks the goblin one by one but none of them are his name. She is frustrated and miserable about that. She wanders outside the palace and arrives at the market. She sees the goblin is singing and says his name in the song. Therefore she writes down his name. That night, the goblin comes to the palace. Kelly pretends that she doesn't know his name but she tells the right name at last. He is surprised and stamps his feet. He wants to leave forever but Kelly asks him to visit the baby sometimes. Finally, Kelly lives happily with her baby boy and the prince. The goblin also visits them now and then.
I think this book is interesting and enjoyable. The ending is surprising. The pictures are also beautiful but the words may be quite hard for younger children. From this book, I learnt that we should help others.
My favourite character is the goblin because he was helpful and helped Kelly. However, I think he should not take away her valuable things, such as her necklace and ring. If I were Kelly's father, I would not boasted to the king since it may cause trouble to Kelly.
Overall, this book was exciting and interesting. I would recommend it to all P.5-6 students.
